INTRODUCTION:
In the last few decades, there has been a rapid increase in super spreader viruses across the globe. Recent outbreak of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has a massive impact on the societies around the world. The rapid spread of COVID-19 led to considerable deaths and causalities throughout the world, and forced the governments to take several precautionary measures to contain the spread of the virus. These measures included (i) ban on unnecessary travel, (ii) adherence to social distancing norms, (iii) closure of schools, offices, restaurants, shops, and international borders, (iv) encouragement to work from home, etc. These measures impacted urban transport, logistics, tourism, international travel and freight transport, which in turn affected the economy. After the availability of vaccine, several governments have started lifting the restrictions to bring back normalcy and restore the economy. But, due to the rapid mutation of the virus and formation of new strains, the disease has again become progressive and impacted several Asian countries which have low levels of vaccination. Therefore, several nations are imposing the restrictions again, which will weaken their economy further. Also, there are uncertainties regarding the end of pandemic era.

There are several aspects of travel during COVID-19 outbreak and recovery period, which are of interest to transport planner and policy makers. These include (i) effectiveness of various policies, measures and restriction imposed by the government during the COVID-19 outbreak, (ii) short and long terms changes on destination, trip, mode of travel, etc. triggered by COVID-19 outbreak, (iii) consequence of these changes on transport externalities such as congestion, energy, emission, safety, etc., (iv) policies and measures for faster recovery of long distance travel, tourism, international travel, etc. to accelerate economic growth after the removal of COVID related restrictions, (v) experiences or lessons learned from different cities, countries and geographical regions during present pandemic, and better preparedness for similar pandemic in the future. This virtual special issue will include all these aspects and any other aspects related to travel and transport in Asian countries during COVID-19 outbreak and recovery period, which are of interest to transport planner and policy makers.
